The dance-theatre group and artists community Studio TaKsu was founded by Djarot B. Darsono, Eko Supendi and Budi S. Susilo. Since their establishment in 1995, the initiative is working according to a common philosophy, which focuses on an intensive and continuous development process and the possibility of a joint experimental work process. A particularity of Studio TaKsu is the strong commitment to promote and encourage each other within the group. Due to mutual help and extensive support within the group, Studio TaKsu manages to realise stage performances and other projects with minimal financial means and for this to contribute to a positive artistic environment. At the same time the group tries to make sure that every member of the group can show their newest artwork as a dancer, a choreographer or a musician to the public on a regular basis and so enables them to progress in their artistic development. Being a small and independent group, Studio TaKsu is devoted on handling and formulating topics with a sharp and critical eye, in order to respond to the pace and dynamic of the quickly changing Indonesian society. If they success to express themselves in a way that their spectatorship will receive new impulse and innovative thoughts, than Studio TaKsu feels confirmed in their self-chosen role inside the artists community. And as the city of Solo is a centre for contemporary dance on Java, there is a fruitful and reciprocal relationship between Studio TaKsu and their artistic environment. In their artistic work Studio TaKsu concentrate on following themes:

  • The consequences of the recent changes in Indonesian history from an totalitarian to an democratic system, both for the society and the individual
  • The effects of technological progress on the social structure during the transition from an agrarian society to an industrial society - The relationship between mankind and nature with special attention to the consequences of environmental pollution.
  • The changing role of woman and other gender related aspects in an Muslim and patriarchal dominated society

Most of the dancers from „Studio TaKsu“ had their professional training in traditional dance. During their personal working experiences and artistic development, they combined elements of traditional dance with modern movements and so created a new and own form of expression.

As results of their common work during the last 20 years Studio TaKsu already presented more than 40 major productions created by different members of the group. The pieces have been shown in different cities in Indonesia as well as abroad.
